LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — Lower Merion Township leadership Wednesday is poised to OK red light cameras in the municipality.
The board of commissioners will vote at their Wednesday meeting on advertising an ordinance that would see the installation of the first camera at Lancaster Avenue and Remington Road.
The ordinance would amend Chapter 145 of the township code by adding a new article on automated red light enforcement.
Violators will be fined $100.
According to documents submitted by the township’s police committee on June 4, Lancaster Avenue and Remington Road was identified as a problematic intersection with 83 recorded violations in a study conducted by the Sensys Gatso Group.
“We’re starting at this location due to the higher number and severity of crashes recorded there,” documents read.
The study also recorded 339 violations in 24 hours at Lancaster Avenue and Haverford Station Road, and 249 violations at Montgomery Avenue and Airdale Road, making them the worst intersections for violations in the township.
Homing in on one intersection initially would allow for reduced administrative workload and officer time commitment; testing and refining processes for violation reviews, hearings, and public communication; and gathering early data on the program’s impact, which can inform future
Two cameras will be deployed at Lancaster and Remington, one for the eastbound and one for the westbound approaches to ensure comprehensive monitoring, officials said.
After a 12-to-18 month trial period, officials will evaluate the program’s effectiveness at Lancaster and Remington.
Factors that will be weighed include changes in violation rates, crash data, revenue generation, and administrative efficiency.
Based on results, assess whether current staffing levels and resources can support expanding to additional intersections.
If officials deem the red light camera program successful, officials will prioritize adding cameras at Montgomery Avenue and Airdale Road, and Lancaster Avenue and Haverford Station Road.
