Mayor Scott Conger delivered the reading at City Hall. The event marked July 8, 1776 — the date of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence, which is distinct from the July 4th date commonly associated with the nation’s independence.
Larry Newsom, president of the Sons of the American Revolution, attended dressed as a Revolutionary War soldier. Organizers said they hoped attendees could gain a deeper understanding of the country’s history.
“Oh, to me, it’s an awesome event,” Newsom said. “All the events that we’ve been recreating and celebrating for the past year have been just wonderful to think that this country has made it 250 years and we still pay tribute to the events that happened at the beginning of our country.”
Attendees received an American flag keepsake and were invited to sign a copy of the historical document.
