A CENTURY OF COMFORT:
A FAMILY NAME. A COMMITMENT TO QUALITY. A LEGACY BUILT ON TRUST SINCE 1917.

For over 100 years, families in the Back Mountain and Northeastern Pennsylvania have trusted the Monk name through changing seasons and changing technologies. Generation after generation, neighbors have relied on the Monk family for honest advice, dependable service, and craftsmanship that stands the test of time.
The First Generation: Earl Monk — The Builder (1917)
When Earl H. Monk began repairing coal furnaces in 1917, winters in the Wyoming Valley were unforgiving, and reliable heat wasn’t a luxury, it was survival. He didn’t know it then, but he was laying the foundation for a family legacy that would span more than a century. What began as one man’s dedication to serving his neighbors would become one of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s oldest continuously family-owned HVAC companies.
He opened a store in Shavertown selling everything from hardware to appliances, with a promise of prompt and efficient service. Every service call strengthened relationships with families who trusted him year after year, laying the foundation for a company that would serve generations of homeowners.
Earl continued leading the business until his passing on October 16, 1951.
His legacy, however, was only beginning.
The Second Generation: Robert Monk —
The Backbone (1950s–1990s)
Following Earl’s passing, his son Robert “Bob” Monk assumed ownership of the company at just 18 years old. It was an enormous responsibility, but one he embraced with determination.
For the next four decades, Bob guided Monk Heating through one of the most significant periods of change in the heating industry. Homes transitioned from coal to oil and eventually to natural gas, while forced-air heating systems became increasingly common.
Bob overhauled the business, expanded its services, and built a reputation for dependable workmanship throughout the Wyoming Valley and Back Mountain. Customers came to know Monk Heating could always be counted on, not only for technical expertise, but for reliability and personal service.
The Third Generation: Dan Monk —
The Modernizer (1990s–2020s)
When Dan Monk assumed ownership in 1994, the HVAC industry was evolving rapidly. Efficiency standards tightened and new technologies emerged. Homes were being built differently and customers expected year-round comfort. Dan recognized early that the future of the business would depend on how he adapted to these changes.
Dan was the bridge between the old world and the new, honoring the family’s reputation while pushing the business into the future. Under Dan’s leadership, Monk Heating became a full-service HVAC contractor recognized throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania for combining modern technology with old-fashioned customer service.
If a system could be repaired instead of replaced, he made sure customers knew it. If a more efficient option would save a homeowner money long-term, he explained it clearly. Under Dan’s leadership, Monk Heating didn’t just grow in size; it grew in reputation.
Although Dan remains an active part of Monk Heating, he passed the torch to Rob and Jim Monk, continuing a four-generation tradition of family leadership.
The Fourth Generation: Robert & Jim Monk —
The Innovators (2020s–Current )
When Rob and Jim Monk stepped into leadership, they weren’t walking into something unfamiliar, they were stepping into scenes they had grown up around their entire lives.
They had watched the business long before they ever worked in it. Service trucks coming and going. Phones ringing during winter storms. Conversations at the kitchen table about customers, repairs, and making sure a customer’s heat was back on before the next cold night. For them, Monk Heating wasn’t just a family business; it was part of everyday life.
Rob and Jim bring a modern approach to a century-old company by embracing new technology, advanced tools, energy-efficient systems, and streamlined service operations. They understand that every call still represents a home, a family, and a problem that needs to be solved quickly and honestly. Together, Rob and Jim continue to grow the company while holding tightly to the values that have been passed down for generations.
Looking Forward:
More than 100 years after Earl Monk opened the doors in 1917, the family is still building, not just in business, but in legacy. Today, Rob and Jim continue that tradition with pride, and the next generation is already beginning to take shape. And the most remarkable part? It still feels like just the beginning.
Even after all these years, the promise remains the same- do it right and stand behind it.
