A retired police officer was arrested Tuesday in connection with the sexual assault of a teenage girl in Burlington County, New Jersey, according to officials.

On Friday, July 10, Burlington County Prosecutor LaChia L. Bradshaw and Maple Shade Police Chief Brian P. Weiss announced charges against 67-year-old Louis J. Baselice, who is accused of sexually assaulting an underage girl.

According to prosecutors, Baselice is a retired officer who worked for the Haddonfield Police Department.

Officials said the abuse was reported by acquaintances of the victim.

According to prosecutors, preliminary investigation revealed that Baselice bought an electric scooter and cell phone for the victim, among other items, and also gave her his credit card number so she could order food.

Officials did not reveal any other details to protect the victim’s identity.

Baselice, who is from Maple Shade, was charged with second-degree sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

In a statement, the Haddonfield Police Department addressed the charges against Baselice, and said he has not served in the department for more than a decade.

“The Haddonfield Police Department has been informed of charges filed by the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office against a former Haddonfield police officer who served as a School Resource Officer from 2005 to 2009 and has not served within our department for more than a decade. During his time here, the department received no complaints or reports of any wrongdoing. The individual has no current connection to the Borough or the Haddonfield Police Department. We support the Prosecutor’s Office and other law enforcement partners in their investigation into this matter.”
