CLEVELAND (WJW) — The U.S. Coast Guard Sunday morning said the search for a 6-year-old who was reported to be in Lake Erie near a Cleveland marina Saturday night is now a recovery mission.

Crews responded to the East 55th Street Marina around 8:45 p.m. on July 11 where a child was reported to be in the water, according to Cleveland Fire.

The fire department’s boat scanned the water several times and deployed two divers, fire officials said.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources also deployed divers, however the child was not located, Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael Lauofo, with USCG Great Lakes, told Fox 8 News.

Helicopters, drones and sonar were also used during the search.

A shoe belonging to the child was found in the water, and a witness reported hearing a splash in the area where the shoe was found, Lauofo said.

Crews, which included the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Cleveland Metroparks and the Cleveland Fire Department, called off the search around 10 p.m. Saturday.

They were back at the marina Sunday morning where the recovery effort was ongoing.

It’s not known how the child ended up in the water.
