Body recovered Saturday on Lake Erie in Berlin Township
A body was recovered from Lake Erie Saturday, July 11 in Berlin Township, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Police and the Lucas County Coroner’s Office are working to determine if the deceased is 30-year-old Jesus “Chewy” Sanchez of Monroe, who went missing July 3 while kayaking when a severe storm moved through the area.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Monroe County Central Dispatch received a call from a boater in the area of the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area near the Banana Dikes. The caller reported observing what appeared to be a body floating in the water near the northernmost dike, approximately 15 feet from shore.
Deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the Berlin Township Fire Department and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources responded to the area. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division and Dive Team also responded and recovered the deceased from approximately three to four feet of water.
The individual was transported to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office for positive identification and an autopsy.
