ELMIRA, NY (WENY) — An Elmira man is throwing his hat in the ring for a seat on Elmira City Council.
On early Monday morning, Anthony Cantando announced his candidacy for the fourth district.
That seat is currently held by Gary Brinn, whose term ends in 2027.
In a statement, Cantando said, “The Elmira City Council has been working against our city’s interests for far too long, and over the last four years, nobody has been a better representative of everything wrong with our city government than Gary Brinn. My district deserves better representation, and I’m hoping to be that change.”
According to the press release, Cantando is launching his campaign on three promises:
Introduce legislation to restore the second public comment section to Elmira City Council Meetings
Introduce legislation outright banning the construction of data centers within the city
Look into every possible avenue to end the city’s contract with FLOCK and remove all FLOCK cameras within the city
Cantando is 25 years old and will run as a democrat, but said he plans to campaign on a platform with ‘no strict partisan lean.’
