A 19-year-old Ohio man stuffed a gold chain inside a full Brisk iced tea can after stealing the jewelry valued at $7,526 from a store at the Viewmont Mall, police said.
Souleyman Bah of Reynoldsburg and two other men face charges related to the theft from the Gold N Diamond store on Saturday, according to a criminal complaint.
County dispatchers informed Dickson City Patrolman Matthew Gallagher around 12:01 p.m. that three males were fleeing the scene, down Viewmont Drive, in a gray SUV, police said.
Gallagher spotted the vehicle at the intersection of Main Street and Viewmont Drive before it turned onto Johnson Avenue at a high rate of speed and then stopped, officers said.
As Gallagher approached the vehicle and identified the driver as Ahmed Sanfo, he could smell a strong scent of marijuana coming from inside, according to the criminal complaint.
Sanfo, 18, of Columbus, Ohio, initially denied taking anything from the mall or driving erratically, police said.
The front-seat passenger — identified as Bah — told police someone was chasing them out of the mall.
Bah stated he was trying on a necklace when a salesperson asked for it back, but he walked away after claiming he paid for it, officers said.
When questioned by police, Bah said he had the chain inside the Brisk can, which he handed over to officers, according to the criminal complaint.
The store’s operator, Sampanna Maharjan, said Sanfo distracted her while she gave Bah the card machine to pay for the jewelry, police said.
Maharjan gave the chain to Bah to try on and noticed he entered the credit card number, but didn’t enter a card to the machine, officers said.
She then asked Bah to put the item back, but he refused, and all three males ran out of the mall, according to the criminal complaint.
Maharjan provided Dickson City police with video of the incident which showed her making several hand movements toward Bah to get the item back before he ran out of the mall, officers said.
Sanfo told officers he was using the bathroom and wasn’t sure what took place in the store, but added that he was also being chased by the female employee, police said.
However, in the video, Sanfo can be seen distracting the employee, according to the criminal complaint. He also voluntarily told police he had marijuana in the center console of the vehicle, officers said.
After receiving consent to search the vehicle, police found a fake Mississippi ID, a green grinder, and marijuana in the center console; a gray plastic bag with marijuana in the back seat; and a fake Georgia temporary registration plate in the trunk, according to the criminal complaint.
The back-seat passenger — identified as Nijea Belfast, 19, of Brooklyn — denied the marijuana from the back belonged to him, police said.
After running the vehicle identification number, officers discovered the SUV was last registered in New York with a stolen registration plate.
Additionally, Mayfield Police Chief Joseph Perechinsky told Dickson City police that he had a similar situation in the borough with the same suspects, stating they used seven different card numbers from their phone but only one was accepted, according to the criminal complaint.
Through the investigation, Dickson City police discovered Bah had a stolen item from Mayfield valued at $3,100, hidden in his sock.
Police charged Sanfo with retail theft; altered, forged or counterfeit documents and plates; possession of marijuana; possession of drug paraphernalia, and fraudulent use or removal of a registration plate.
Bah faces charges of retail theft, receiving stolen property, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Police charged Belfast with retail theft, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
As of Monday, Bah, Belfast, and Sanfo remained in Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $150,000 bail. A preliminary hearing for each man is scheduled for July 22 at 9:30 a.m.
