Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro announced in April $267 million to fund 31 projects aimed at reducing air pollution through the state’s Reducing Industrial Sector Emissions in Pennsylvania (RISE PA) program. The grants will be given out throughout the summer.
The money will go toward projects that help industrial facilities reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by shifting to electrification, increasing energy efficiency, adding renewable energy or through other means. The program is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grants.
Industry contributes the largest share of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions, at 30%. The council and the governor expect the investments will reduce carbon emissions by about 1.3 million metric tons in the program’s first year of implementation.
Below are a few of the awarded projects:
Alouette Cheese USA: Almost $45 million to add energy efficiency measures, implement truck refrigeration unit electrification and install an anaerobic digester and wastewater treatment plant at its food manufacturing facility in Lancaster CountyWheeland Lumber Company: $3.7 million to install a biomass steam boiler and combined heat-and-power system that will generate 0.275 megawatts (MW) of power at its lumber facility in Lycoming CountyG&S Foods: $3.4 million to install a 4 MW solar system with almost 2 MW of battery storage at its food manufacturing facility in Adams County
