Martin G. Kuhn

OBITUARY

Martin G. Kuhn died on July 10, following a courageous battle against Parkinson’s disease. Born in Scranton, Marty was the son of the late George and Mary Boyle Kuhn, he started to engage in life on February 7, 1943. A devoted Catholic, who saw God in everyone, met his love, the former Evelyn Regan, at 16 years old, married her at 21, honored and courted her as his best friend and lover through 63 years of marriage that evolved into three new generations.

Marty loved his first twelve years at St. Ann’ s Basilica Parish School, then worked his way to a B.A. in History on a Jesuit work-scholarship in the Jesuit Estate Quarters. While earning an M.A. in education, he began, and was hooked on, teaching. It was those years at Scranton Tech! History remained his field, but people, his major.

Advancing his career into administration, he discovered the joy of the elementary learning field while serving as Principal at John Bartram No 37, John Lowell No 43, Harriet Beecher Stowe No 30, and Daniel Webster No 15. His oversight of the first open space school in the Scranton system at McNichols Plaza brought over twenty years of fulfillment with children and faculty he loved. After retiring from the Scranton School District, he decided to keep learning and spent five years as Principal at the Scranton Hebrew Day School.

Marty was a natural gatherer. His gift of bringing people together forged bonds emanating from neighborhoods and church projects, work and volunteering, vacations, and religious interests. “Do you want to come to” started many of his sentences. Rock Steady Boxing, where he and Evelyn found new friends while fighting his major adversary, was the latest group to share in his special talent.

Marty leaves to love and remember him his wife, Evelyn, their children: Martin G. Kuhn, Jr., (Rebecca) of Stevenson, VA, Karin R Stang (Will) of Dunmore, PA, Thomas W. Kuhn (Anne) of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; his grandchildren: Victoria Rodriguez, Emily Jones, Alexa Castellani, Jude Kuhn, Gabriel Kuhn, and Cooper Kuhn and seven great-grandchildren: Beau, Ford, Briggs, Danny, Hudson, Sofia, Evelina; two brothers-in-law: Thomas Regan and David Regan; and many loved nieces and nephews, cousins, dear friends and extended friendships. He was preceded in death by newly born sons, Jude and Daniel Kuhn, beloved grandson, Zachary Wrightson, and dear Goddaughter, Catherine Doyle, his beloved sisters Patrica Mulligan, and Mary Jane Zimmermann.

The funeral will be Wednesday from the Albert P. O’Donnell Funeral Home, 2025 Green Ridge Street, Dunmore with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. at Saint Paul’s Church, 1510 Penn Avenue, Scranton. Interment Cathedral Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday at the funeral home from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. All those attending the funeral are asked to proceed directly to the church on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations in his memory to St. Joseph’s Center of Scranton, PA, Rock Steady Boxing of Northeast PA, or Sacred Heart Hospice of Dunmore, PA.
