SCRANTON
Hazy smoke from Canadian wildfires could create visibility challenges and cause health issues for sensitive groups as it rolls into Northeast Pennsylvania on Wednesday, said Bryan Greenblatt, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
Greenblatt noted the fires erupted across southcentral Canada on Monday and the wind pattern is bringing the smoke southward into the northeast.
Starting Wednesday, the smoke should begin moving closer to the surface, he added.
“It’s going to be a higher concentration across New York, but even across Northeast Pennsylvania, especially during the afternoon, you could see smoke starting to move in,” Greenblatt said.
Greenblatt expects the smoke to linger throughout Thursday, and possibly longer depending on the wind direction.
While some people may be impacted, Greenblatt stressed the air quality likely won’t be as poor as in June 2023 when the sky turned orange.
