A large scrap fire is burning on Industrial Drive in Darby Township.
The call came in shortly after 10 a.m. and numerous fire stations have responded to the blaze at EMR recycling, which was described as metal in the yard on fire, in the unit block of Industrial Drive off Calcon Hook and Hook roads.
A column of black smoke was visible for miles.
Darby Township has posted an alert on social media that residents should avoid the area and keep windows and doors shut.
Radio traffic indicated the fire was about 100 feet by 150 feet with hazardous materials teams dispatched to the incident.
The company website indicates they purchase an assortment of scrap metal, including electrical goods, domestic appliances, catalytic converters and vehicles.
With the high heat, rehab and numerous health units were brought to the scene.
