MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) – Marietta Post 64 defeated New Philadelphia Post 139, 17-0, in five innings in an elimination game at the Region 4 tournament.
Marietta wasted no time, plating four runs in the first inning. Will Tornes led off with a single, and after a walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases, Gavin Fling lined a ball back up the middle to score Tornes. Braun Doak followed him home, sliding under the tag to make it 2-0.
With two outs, Drew Warden hit a popup that a New Philadelphia fielder lost in the sun at second base. The ball fell for an error, allowing two more runs to score and giving Marietta a 4-0 lead after one inning.
New Philadelphia recorded their first hit of the game when Justin Graber singled into left field, but AJ Copen struck out the next batter to strand the runner and end the inning.
Marietta continued to add to their lead as Jacob Sealey ripped a single past the diving third baseman to put two runners in scoring position. With the bases loaded again, Fling hit a hard one-hopper to second base. New Philadelphia recorded the force out at second, but a run scored on the play.
Marietta Post 64 went on to win 17-0 in five innings.
