Finding a spot on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defensive line won’t be easy for Gabriel Rubio. That’s exactly the challenge the rookie is embracing as he begins his NFL career with one of the league’s deepest groups in the trenches.
Selected in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, Rubio enters a defensive line room loaded with proven veterans and recent draft picks. Nothing will be handed to him, but Pittsburgh has built a reputation for developing defensive linemen who are willing to put in the work and wait for their opportunity. For Rubio, earning a role will come one day at a time.
The Steelers have invested heavily in their defensive front over the last several years, adding talent through both the draft and free agency. As a result, competition for roster spots will be among the highest on the team, leaving every practice rep and preseason snap carrying added importance.
Throughout his college career, Rubio earned a reputation as a physical run defender willing to do the dirty work inside. Rather than piling up sacks, Rubio excelled at occupying blockers, controlling gaps and allowing linebackers and edge rushers to make plays around him. Those are traits that have long been valued in Pittsburgh’s defensive system.
One of Rubio’s best performances came against Penn State when he consistently held his own against future Baltimore Ravens first-round pick Olaivavega Ioane. Rubio’s ability to anchor against the run and battle one of the top offensive line prospects in the country reinforced why the Steelers believed he was worth taking a chance on late in the draft.
Rubio’s path to playing time won’t be easy. The Steelers’ defensive line is loaded with established veterans and recent draft picks, meaning he will likely have to earn his opportunities through preseason performances and continued development behind the scenes. But depth becomes critical over a 17-game season, and injuries often create chances for players lower on the depth chart.
For now, the objective is simple, prove he belongs. If Rubio can continue showing the same physicality and consistency that defined his career at Notre Dame, he’ll give himself a chance to become another late-round success story on Pittsburgh’s defensive line.

College: Rubio arrived at Notre Dame in 2021 as a four-star recruit from St. Peters, MO. Over five seasons, he appeared in more than 35 games while developing into one of the Fighting Irish’s most dependable interior defenders. His ability to stop the run, occupy multiple blockers and play with consistent effort made him a valuable part of Notre Dame’s defensive front. He capped his college career by helping lead the Fighting Irish to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
