Berks County is divided into three jurisdictions: Reading, Muhlenberg Township and the rest of the county. Reading and Muhlenberg Township have their own food safety inspectors and the rest of the county is inspected by Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture inspectors.

All food vendors are inspected at least once a year. Other inspections can be triggered by a change of owner, a follow up if a facility had been out of compliance or by a complaint filed with the PDA.

Andy Pepper’s, 820 Limekiln Road, Limekiln , June 12: one violation. Prepackaged food items in self-serve refrigeration units are not labeled properly with the ingredient statement or a sign indicating the ingredients are available upon request.

Cloud Nine Cafe, 84 Commerce Drive, Wyomissing , June 12: three violations. Foods (eggs) are served raw or undercooked to the customer’s request; however, a written consumer advisory (on the menu, table tent, or placard) is not provided to the consumer. Owner will reprint the menus with the advisory. Food (small containers of pasta salad) were held at 50* °F, in self-serve display case, rather than 41°F or below as required. Items were thrown away. Observed an accumulation of dirt/debris on the floor under food preparation tables at the back of the kitchen and on flooring/shelving in the side room.

Food Fix, Noble St., Kutztown , June 12: no violations.

Island Noodles Pa Mff (Xls7610), 25 Village Center Drive Unit B2, Reading , June 12: three violations. No sign posted at the handwash sink to remind food employees to wash their hands. PIC created/hung handwash sign. Observed a buildup of old food residue on the hose outlet, a food contact surface, used to dispense sauce from bulk container not clean to sight and touch. Hose will not be used until replaced; facility will scoop sauce with ladle. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view.

Linda’s Hoagie Stand, 740 Noble St., Kutztown , June 12: no violations.

Spoonful Thai Bistro, 610 Penn Ave., West Reading , June 12: six violations. Door to the outside, located in the basement area of the food facility, is open and the screen door(s) are also open. Corrected. Observed food items stored directly on the floor in basement area and walk-in cooler, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. An open employee’s beverage container was observed in a kitchen food preparation area. Corrected. One and 3/4 cases of eggs held at 60-68 °F, in the basement area, rather than 45°F or below as required. Facility will keep a smaller quantity of eggs out at one time. The cases were returned to the walk-in cooler. The handwash sink in the upstairs drink bar area was blocked by dishes and was not accessible at all times for employee use. Corrected. ableware at the upstairs drink bar is not displayed so that only handles are touched when dispensed. Corrected.
