BERKS COUNTY, Pa. – The air over Berks County and the rest of the state is taking on an ominous appearance.

“I didn’t hear about the smoke until about an hour later, when I looked up at the sun. I heard there was a fire going on in Canada,” said Berks County resident Janet DeWalt.

DeWalt told 69 News that she’s concerned, especially with her family’s history of health issues.

“I’m nervous about that because at the end of the day, we don’t know what’s in the air, what’s blowing through the air at the end of the day,” DeWalt said.

A pulmonary doctor with Respiratory Specialists in Spring Township says some groups should consider their health history when it comes to dealing with the air quality.

“Smoke from wildfires is actually more dangerous than regular pollution,” said Dr. Alec Platt. “Wearing a mask is helpful, and given the small size of the particles, an N95 mask is the most appropriate mask to wear if you have to be out for any amount of time,” Platt added.

Doctor Platt says if you have asthma, COPD, or heart disease, you are at higher risk.

“People who have underlying lung disease may benefit from using their inhalers a lot, or if they’re struggling despite that, they may need medical attention, urgent care, or to call a doctor,” said Dr. Platt.

If you or your loved ones have any of these pre-existing conditions, be sure to take precautions over the next couple of days.
