SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A downtown Scranton water main break starting late Thursday night could be repaired as early as Saturday, with the potential to last through Sunday, according to officials.

The break occurred just before 11:00 p.m. at the intersection of Mulberry Street and North Washinton Avenue in downtown Scranton.

Throughout the day Friday, Scranton City Hall, Lackawanna County Courthouse, Lackawanna County Government Center and many other buildings and businesses have been impacted by the water main break.

According to PA American Water, as of publication, crews are currently excavating the area of the main break near the intersection of North Washington Avenue and Mulberry Street. 

“We are working to bring in specialized equipment that will allow crews to isolate the broken main and limit the impacted area,” a spokesperson from Pennsylvania American Water said.  “While crews are preparing and excavating the area this evening, the repairs are expected to take place Saturday and could last through Sunday.

The location of the break and nearby valves used to shut down the broken main are creating difficulties in repairing the main, Pennsylvania American Water said in a release.

A woman 28/22 News spoke with who lives in Mulberry Towers said she has not had water since about 9:00 a.m. when she was trying to take a shower.

Businesses in the affected area, including Abe’s Deli and Spin and Savory on North Washington Avenue, made the decision to close business early due to the lack of customers they were seeing.

“We typically see 30 customers by noon without a water main break,” Floriana Adragana, co-owner of Spin and Savory said. “Today, we maybe had four customers by noon.”
