SCRANTON, Pa. — Rushing water and construction workers seen in Scranton Friday after a water main break.

“This is not something you see every day,” said Matt Escott, a Scranton resident. “There are thousands of gallons of water flowing straight up out of the middle of the road.”

People taking advantage of water tankers after Pennsylvania American Water announced a water main break near the intersection of North Washington Avenue and Mulberry Street.

Joe Schlesser lives in an apartment nearby and found out about the break around 9 p.m. Thursday.

“It’s cloudy now, we have the water since they haven’t turned the main off to stop the leak yet. It’s cloudy but no pressure at all,” Schlesser said.

Pennsylvania American water said crews are out excavating the area.

The company said crews on site are experiencing some difficulty in repairing the main because of where the break is located.

The company believes a six-inch main broke off a 24-inch transmission line.

“I didn’t think it would be this long you know a normal water break or something, a small water break, they have it done in a couple of hours… it’s difficult. we can’t clean no water to flush the toilets, thank God for the water tankers so we can get water to flush our toilets, use the water to cook with. But other than that, it’s tough,”

While this is impacting some residents downtown, the FIFA World Cup Fan Zone is still set to kick off Saturday at Courthouse Square.

Pennsylvania American water said repairs are expected to take place Saturday and could last through Sunday.
