Work continues on major water main break in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Crews are continuing work on a water main break in downtown Scranton that started Thursday night.

According to a representative from PA American Water, a 6-inch water main broke near the intersection of North Washington Avenue and Mulberry Street. This is connected to a 24-inch transmission line, which means PA American Water has no accurate estimate of how many customers are affected by the break.

 Thursday night main break repairs could last into weekend 

Contractors will be working through Saturday, installing equipment to isolate the break, the representative said. Once the break is isolated, crews can begin working to repair the broken main and valves.

Water tankers are available on North Washington Avenue and at the Scranton Fire Department on Mulberry Street.

While crews work on the break, setup continues in Courthouse Square for Saturday afternoon’s FIFA Fan Zone. Terry Deitz, the event planner, said the water main break will not affect the World Cup festivities.
