SWB RAILRAIDERS: Escarra’s home run in ninth sinks Worcester – Scranton Times-Tribune

J.C. Escarra homered with one out in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRlders to a 5-4 victory over the Worcester Red Sox on Sunday afternoon at PNC Field in Moosic.

Escarra finished with three hits and two RBIs, while George Lombard Jr. and Oswaldo Cabrera each added two hits for the RailRiders (13-6 second half, 50-43 overall), who won both games played in the scheduled three-game series. Saturday’s game was postponed by rain.

Worcester rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game, 4-4, on a one-out RBI single by Nate Eaton, a two-out pinch-hit RBI single by Mickey Gasper and a RBI double by Brett Harris. Then, in the top of the ninth, the WooSox put the go-ahead run at third base when Braiden Ward tripled with two outs. But Yovanny Cruz struck out Nick Sogard to keep the game tied.

In the bottom of the ninth, Escara hit an 0-1 pitch from Sam McWilliams over the fence in right field for the game-winner. It is his fourth home run of the season.

The RailRiders used the long ball to build a 4-1 lead.

Eaton helped give Worcester a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when he singled with two outs, advanced to third on a double by Andrew Knziner and scored on a wild pitch by RailRiders starter Alexander Cornielle.

But in the bottom of the second, Cabrera homered to right on a 2-0 pitch from WooSox starter Osvaldo Berrios to tie the game at 1. It is Cabrera’s 10th home run.

It stayed tied until the bottom of the sixth. Spencer Jones led off with a double that chased reliever Tyler Samaniego in favor of Seth Martinez. Marco Luciano greeted Martinez by sending a 3-2 pitch over the left-center field fence for his seventh home run and a 3-1 RailRiders lead.

Consecutive two-out doubles by Lombard and Escarra in the bottom of the seventh extended the margin to 4-1.

Cruz (7-3), the eighth RailRiders pitcher used in the game, got the win. Worcester used seven pitchers with McWilliams (1-1) taking the loss.

On Tuesday, the RailRiders continue their homestand when they begin a six-game series against the Syracuse Mets at 7:05 p.m.
