The City of Erie is opening three cooling centers as high temperatures move into the area this week, officials announced Tuesday.
The cooling centers will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, through Thursday, July 2.
They will be located at Perry Square, Wayne Park near 1001 Atkins St. and Gridley Park at 598 Liberty St.
City officials said the dates and hours may change depending on the weather and community need.
The cooling centers are available for anyone who needs relief from the heat, including people without air conditioning.
The city is also accepting donations of water bottles and electrolyte packets at the cooling center locations. Volunteers are also welcome.
Mayor Daria S. Devlin encouraged residents to use the cooling centers, check on neighbors, donate supplies or volunteer if they are able.
City officials are reminding people to limit time outside during the hottest part of the day, drink water, wear lightweight clothing and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles.
Residents should also check on older adults, people who live alone and others who may need help.
Anyone experiencing signs of heat illness, including dizziness, confusion, nausea or a rapid heartbeat, should move to a cooler place and seek help if needed.
