SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — On Monday morning, veteran organizations gathered in Scranton for the annual appointment of city grants.

Every year since taking office, the mayor’s office, in conjunction with city council, has given out grants to organizations that assist veterans operating within Scranton.

On Monday, at the Scranton Veteran’s Memorial Park, Scranton mayor Paige Cognetti awarded representatives of eight veterans’ organizations with their grants, ranging from $5,000 to $16,000.

“The grants this time are up to $16,000 that we gave and again, $16,000 for a local organization can be the difference between being able to help veterans and not being able to do it for the year,” said Mayor Cognetti. “So, it’s really a wonderful program. These are organizations that we know well that do a great job for our community and make sure that our veterans always have what they need.”

The organizations submitted their grand applications in March and April then decided on the eight after an internal review.

The organizations help with everything from giving veterans rides to employment and medical appointments, restoring gravestones of world war veterans, renovating facilities, and more.
