Health officials are reminding everyone to stay alert for harmful algal blooms as people spend more time on the water this summer.
Last month, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted a moderate harmful algae bloom for western Lake Erie could start appearing in mid-July.

While harmful algal bloom levels are not at the predicted levels everywhere, the Erie County Department of Health said knowing what to look for can help keep you safe.
They recommend avoiding water that appears bright green, resembles spilled paint, or has thick surface scum. If exposure does occur, officials said people should rinse off with clean water and contact a healthcare provider if symptoms develop.

“A lot of advisories along Presque Isle Bay, and also some locations on the eastern side. Presque Isle out toward Lawrence Park and Harbor Creek. Mostly in areas of warm, steady water,” said Jesse Stiles, the director of environmental health services.
Officials also remind pet owners to keep animals away from suspicious water, as dogs can become seriously ill after drinking or swimming in water affected by harmful algae. A live map of advisories can also be seen below:
