An investigation was underway overnight after, officials said, a boy was struck and killed by a freight train while walking along tracks in the Bustleton section of Northeast Philadelphia late Monday.
According to police, the incident happened at about 11:30 p.m., when a boy — who police did not immediately provide further identifying information on — was struck and killed by a train while walking about tracks near the intersection of Welsh and Neil roads in Bustleton.
Contacted about this incident, police said the boy had been reported missing since Sunday, but they did not immediately provide additional information on this case.
Overnight, the roadway in the area was shut to drivers as police investigated the scene, but the area has since re-opened to traffic.
Officials did not immediately say what may have led the child to this area or detail how the boy accessed the tracks but an investigation was ongoing.
