When a Wayne County farmer spied a suspected tornado near his home in Waymart Tuesday afternoon, he immediately reported it to the county’s emergency management team.

Staff there contacted the National Weather Service and determined that there had  been a rotation during the storm, but there had been no damage or flooding, Deputy Director Michael Schuman said. The storm then moved north, he said.

Residents were on watch following a National Weather Service issuance of a tornado warning until 2:15 p.m.

The alert indicated that a tornado was moving toward Waymart with winds at about 20 mph.

It warned of possible damaging flying debris and damage to mobile homes, roofs, windows and vehicles.

Both emergency management services and the National Weather Service are assessing damages, which seem to be less than what forecasters originally feared.

According to National Weather Service meteorologist Jake Chalupsky, the rotation had not been confirmed, but should the NWS obtain more information regarding the nature of the storm, they would make that public.
