SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — One in five Americans experience a mental health condition each year, and today, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI, is working to remind people they don’t have to face it alone.

The organization hosted a community picnic at Nay Aug Park, offering free resources, information, snacks and yard games while giving people a chance to connect with staff and learn about the support available.

“Community is so important when it comes to our mental well-being, and so often individuals or families who are affected by mental health find it hard to build that connection and often isolate. So coming out here to a community event really just helps build upon that,” said Katie Spencer, Director of Programs and Legislative Advocacy.

NAMI says recovery is possible and wants people to know they’re never alone. As a nonprofit, the organization offers free mental health resources and support programs throughout the year for anyone who may need them.
