BLAKELY – Earlier in the week, Lackawanna Trail graduate Tyler Jervis knew he would have a hard time controlling his emotions after the 92nd Scranton Lions Club Dream Game.

His participation in the all-star classic was going to be his final football contest before he heads to Colgate University.

That alone, he knew, would bring him to tears.

Add in that at halftime, his father and head coach Steve Jervis was honored as the Scranton Lions Club Man of the Year, and he knew it was going to be a big night at John Henzes/Veterans Memorial Stadium.

As the only quarterback on the City all-star roster, Jervis turned in an outstanding performance, motivated to lead his team to a win that would snap a six-game losing streak to the County. He completed eight passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns in a 36-35 comeback win on Wednesday night.

Not a bad final effort to cap a championship career.

“To honor my dad like this, it’s just amazing,” Jervis said. “He told me before the game he didn’t care if I went 10-for-10 for 400 yards or if I was 0-for-10 with interceptions; he loves me no matter what. He is the best father in the world, and I respect him so much. He deserved his award.”

Jervis thrived as the starting quarterback for Lackawanna Trail in the Delaware Wing-T scheme that is primarily a running offense. He completed 47 of 95 passes for 935 yards and 14 touchdowns in two seasons, while leading the Lions to a 23-4 record.

In the City’s win, he had a 37-yard touchdown pass to Lackawanna Trail teammate Isaac Ryon. Jervis also found Wallenpaupack’s Mason Gonzalez for catches of 35 and 48 yards and connected with Scranton Prep’s Mackey Lynett for the game’s final touchdown and deciding 2-point conversion in the last five seconds of play.

“My job was easy,” Jervis said. “Our line was amazing. Our skills were amazing. I just needed to get the ball to the right spots.

“This game came down to playing as a team. Our O-line killed it up front, and our defense made some stops.”

Defensive stars

Mid Valley’s Rhys Williams had an interception in the second quarter and returned it 16 yards for a County touchdown to highlight the defensive performances.

Lakeland’s Gavin Roberts had four tackles, and Lakeland’s Kody Miller had a sack for minus-16 yards and a forced fumble for the County.

North Pocono linebacker Aidan Maguire led the City defense with five tackles. West Scranton’s Cameron Cole and Lackawanna Trail linebacker Colin Owens each had three stops.

Big plays

There were 14 plays from the two teams combined of 20 or more yards.

Lackawanna Trail running back Isaac Ryon had runs of 25 and 38 yards in the second quarter, and Wallenpaupack’s Logan Caruso had runs of 20 and 25 yards to highlight the City’s 253-yard rushing effort. Wallenpaupack’s Mason Gonzalez had receptions of 35 and 48 yards, Ryon had receptions of 37 and 30 yards, and Lynett hauled in passes of 31 and 27 yards.

Delaware Valley’s Mike Iuzzolino had a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a 35-yard run for the County. Honesdale’s Kobe White caught a 32-yard pass from Mid Valley’s Brett Yanoski, and Abington Heights’ Gavin Andes had a 31-yard catch.

Kicking standouts

Both the City and the County had outstanding performances by their respective kickers.

Delaware Valley’s Reagan Decker and Riverside’s Santino D’Amico, two All-Region players, combined for seven touchbacks and were 5-for-5 on extra points for the County. Dunmore’s Johnley Jean had one touchback and made two extra points.
