Firefighters were busy overnight, officials said, after flames broke out in the basement of the former Delaware County Memorial Hospital.
According to Upper Darby Fire Chief Nicholas Martin, crews were called to the incident at the vacant structure at 501 North Lansdowne Avenue, just before midnight to find smoke pouring from the building.
He said the first responders quickly discovered a fire in the utility area of the basement of the former hospital and “knocked down” the flames, containing the fire to where it is believed they started.
Overall, he said, about 75 firefighters and “nine or 10” trucks responded to the incident.
However, Martin noted that it was initially difficult for crews to put out the flames as smoke and the sheer size of the vacant property made it tricky to get to the source of the flames.
Just what may have caused this incident, he said, was still being investigated by fire officials.
No one was injured in this incident, he noted.
