SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Just over a week after a major water main break disrupted downtown Scranton and prompted a boil water advisory for hundreds of customers, another break has flooded streets in the city’s central business district and forced the closure of City Hall.
The latest break occurred Monday morning near Lackawanna County Courthouse Square and the William J. Nealon Federal Building, where water flooded roadways and sidewalks buckled under the force of the escaping water.
The cause of the break has not been determined.
As a result of the incident, Scranton City Hall and the federal courthouse were closed Tuesday while officials assessed the damage and worked to address the water main failure.
The latest break comes just days after Pennsylvania American Water spent nearly three days repairing a major main break near the intersection of North Washington Avenue and Mulberry Street. That incident disrupted water service to hundreds of customers, prompted a boil water advisory affecting dozens of downtown streets and required extensive excavation before repairs could be completed.
The advisory from that earlier break was lifted after water quality testing confirmed the system was safe.
It is not immediately clear whether Tuesday’s water main break will affect water service, require additional road closures or lead to another boil water advisory.
Officials have not announced when repairs are expected to be completed.
