Endangered piping plover returns to Pennsylvania after decades
ERIE, Pa. —
The endangered piping plover, a small shorebird that had disappeared from Pennsylvania for more than 60 years, has officially nested in the state for 10 consecutive years.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission said the bird’s only habitat in the state is at Presque Isle on Lake Erie.
Officials said staff worked for years to protect nesting areas and camouflage eggs to improve survival rates.
To mark the occasion, the Pennsylvania House designated July 18 as Piping Plover Day.
