The Pirates swung a trade with the Orioles to add some outfield depth, acquiring Johnathan Rodríguez for cash considerations. Rodríguez, who was designated for assignment by Baltimore on Thursday, has been assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Rodríguez, 26, has appeared in 51 games between the Orioles and Guardians in parts of the last three seasons. He carries a .177/.288/.301 batting line with six doubles, one triple, two home runs, 17 RBIs and one stolen base.
Rodríguez played 62 games with Triple-A Norfolk in Baltimore’s organization this season and batted .270/.370/.391 with 14 doubles, four home runs and 22 RBIs. In parts of nine minor-league seasons, the native of Puerto Rico owns a .284/.363/.483 batting line with 143 doubles, 20 triples, 118 home runs, 448 RBIs and 31 steals in 736 games across six levels.
To make room for Rodríguez on the 40-man roster, the Pirates designated catcher Shawn Ross for assignment. Ross appeared in two games for the Pirates over the weekend and hit a two-run home run for his first-career hit on Sunday.
The Pirates reinstated catcher Endy Rodríguez from the 10-day injured list ahead of Monday’s game against the Diamondbacks at PNC Park.
