Steelers report to Latrobe for training camp at Saint Vincent College
LATROBE, Pa. —
The Pittsburgh Steelers are reporting to Saint Vincent College in Latrobe for training camp on Tuesday.
This marks the first season for Mike McCarthy, a native of Pittsburgh’s Greenfield neighborhood, as the head coach of the black and gold.
While some players are meeting McCarthy for the first time, others were already familiar with Pittsburgh’s new coach.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is in his final NFL season, has a long history with McCarthy, playing under him for 13 seasons in Green Bay. Together, they defeated the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.
Rodgers’ final year with the NFL
In May, Rodgers announced his 22nd year playing professional football would be his last. He signed a one-year deal with the Steelers.
“I had a lot of conversations with (Steelers head coach) Mike (McCarthy) and (general manager) Omar (Khan) for a while, and I just had a lot of conversations with my wife about it, and after the draft, came to a conclusion that I wanted to play and wanted to come back,” he said.
This is Rodgers’ second season with the Steelers.
Who will be the Steelers’ backup quarterback?
Another storyline we’ll be following during Steelers Training Camp is the competition for the QB2 spot.
Mason Rudolph, Will Howard and rookie Drew Allar are all options to play backup for Rodgers. When McCarthy was asked if keeping four quarterbacks on the roster is an option, he answered, “I don’t know why it wouldn’t be. I’m not philosophically opposed to keeping the best players.”
Rudolph has been an occasional starter during seven seasons in Pittsburgh and one in Tennessee. His career record is 9-9-1 as a starting quarterback. In 2025, the Steelers signed Rudolph to a two-year contract that runs through the end of this season.
Howard is heading into his second year. The Steelers selected Howard from Ohio State in Round 6 of the 2025 draft. Howard has not appeared in a regular-season game.
The Steelers also have Allar, a third-round pick from Penn State.
McCarthy has a long track record of working with young quarterbacks, including Rodgers in Green Bay two decades ago.
