The most intense storms from a weather system moving through Lancaster County on Tuesday could cause localized flash flooding and include small hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph.
The system will trigger widespread showers and thunderstorms, with the most severe storms producing torrential downpours and frequent lightning, according to Millersville University meteorologist Kyle Elliott.
“Be alert for debris and standing water on some roadways during the PM commute, and seek shelter in an interior room or basement if a severe thunderstorm warning is issued,” Elliott said Monday.
Elliott said the most intense storms are expected between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The National Weather Service in State College issued a flood watch for central Pennsylvania through late Tuesday night.
The weather service said rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour could lead to rapid runoff into low-lying areas and small streams and creeks.
“Thunderstorms do not have to be severe to produce frequent lightning strikes and heavy downpours that can lead to water on roads and poor visibility for motorists,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said Monday.
Tuesday will be mostly cloudy and humid with scattered showers and heavy thunderstorms, according to the Millersville University Weather Information Center short-term forecast. The high will reach between 78 and 82 degrees. Tuesday night will be partly cloudy and muggy with an evening shower or thunderstorm. The low will be 64 to 68 degrees.
Wednesday will have another chance of thunderstorms with a high of 81 and a low of 64, according to the National Weather Service, which predicts the return of sunny weather with highs in the low to mid-80s and lows in the low to mid-60s for the end of the week.
