Erie County Prison officials are providing clarification following a temporary lockdown at the facility and addressing what they describe as inaccurate information circulating about prison operations.
According to prison officials, the lockdown lasted approximately 30 minutes and was implemented to allow staff to address an issue involving the facility’s Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) system. The system controls various functions within a housing pod and other areas of the prison.
Officials said the prison is currently working with the system’s vendor to complete the necessary repairs.
As part of the maintenance process, some inmates have been temporarily relocated to different housing areas within the facility. Prison leaders emphasized that temporary housing adjustments are a routine part of operations during maintenance projects or other operational needs.
The prison also sought to correct reports regarding the inmate population and facility capacity.
Officials stated that Erie County Prison is currently housing approximately 630 inmates, while the facility’s maximum operational capacity is 720 inmates.
As a result, prison administrators stated claims that officials are discussing probation or inmate releases due to overcrowding are inaccurate. The facility remains below its designed capacity, and no such discussions are taking place based on inmate population levels.
Erie County Prison noted that lockdowns are a routine part of daily operations and may be implemented for a variety of security or operational reasons.
