(WHTM) — Health officials are alarmed at the rising number of measles cases in Pennsylvania.

The state Department of Health reports 142 cases at the start of this week. Lancaster County has by far the most cases, with 84. Those diagnosed have not been fully vaccinated.

A pediatric infectious disease doctor at Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital says he’s seeing a number of children and infants with complications from measles.

“I think it’s a very high level of concern,” Dr. Evan Shirey said. “I think I’ve been worried over the years as we have seen discourse around vaccinations change. And I think this is part of that broader pattern. Measles is, by its characteristics, very infectious.”

Symptoms include fever, rashes and blisters. Health officials say families should consult their doctor but believe the measles vaccine is safe.
