Barstool Sports owner Dave Portnoy is decrying Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s decision to call for a LeBron James Day in the commonwealth. Portnoy said the decision disrespects Philadelphia legends and prioritizes the wrong hometown icons.
Shapiro announced his introduction of LeBron James Day in Pennsylvania on July 24, the day he signed for the 76ers.
Portnoy stated that Allen Iverson, Julius Erving, and Bryce Harper deserve more recognition than LeBron.
“I found it stunning that the governor already declared a LeBron James Day,” Portnoy posted on social media. “It’s a slap in the face to Dr. J (Julius Erving), Allen Iverson, Bryce Harper and a lot of great Philadelphia athletes who never had a day named after them. This guy, at the ripe old age of 74, comes into town and gets a day named after him. I’m telling you, they had better get going fast when he’s on the team because this guy’s personality and psyche does not fit with the city of Philadelphia.”
James reportedly turned down offers from the Cavaliers and the Warriors before signing with the 76ers. According to HITC, the 76ers have not won an NBA championship since 1983.
