You could have hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars sitting unclaimed without realizing it.
To help residents find out, Sen. Dan Laughlin partnered with the Pennsylvania Treasury Department to host a free Unclaimed Property Assistance Event Thursday in Erie.
During the event, officials helped people search Pennsylvania’s unclaimed property database and begin the claims process for assets that may belong to them. Unclaimed property can include uncashed checks, forgotten bank accounts, insurance payments, and even the contents of safe deposit boxes.
According to Laughlin’s office, approximately $1 million has been returned to Erie County residents during the past month and a half through similar efforts.
Treasury officials said residents may also be able to recover physical property, including jewelry and other valuables. The state holds physical items for up to three years while attempting to locate their rightful owners.
Residents can search Pennsylvania’s unclaimed property database at any time online or get assistance through Sen. Laughlin’s office.
