Wegmans to break ground on first Pittsburgh-area store Aug.13
CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. —
Wegmans has announced it will break ground on its first Pittsburgh-area store on Aug. 13.
The 115,000-square-foot grocery store will be built next to the UPMC Lemieux Complex in Cranberry Township, Butler County.
Store officials said they are eyeing a grand opening in the fall of 2027.
Wegmans announced in 2025 that it was expanding in western Pennsylvania.
“At approximately 115,000 square feet, the store will feature all the traditional departments Wegmans customers have come to know and love, including an abundant produce department, a wide variety of seafood, meat, bakery, deli, and cheese options, and a large selection of wine and beer,” Wegmans said in a previous news release.
The move puts Wegmans in competition with longstanding grocers, including Giant Eagle, which moved its headquarters to Cranberry last year.
“You need to be able to see what else is available, and it also allows us to benchmark to make sure that we’re providing the best opportunities,” said Gary Lechter, store operations regional manager for Wegmans’ Pennsylvania division. “Not only do we want to provide the greatest ingredients, the greatest meals, but also the best prices, so we need to have competition for that in order for us to compare favorably.”
Once started, construction is expected to take between 12 to 15 months.
