SCRANTON, Pa. — Even during summer, there was plenty of basketball heat at the Riverfront Sports Complex in Scranton as it held the elite division championships, and it would be a Scranton sweep. First, the girls snuck out a 48 to 41 win over Dunmore, while the boys dominated Holy Cross 71 to 53. Both groups were happy to end the tournament victorious.
“The girls really played hard and they made shots when they had to. Uh, the first half we struggled a little bit, you know, but that’s going to happen this summer. We’re not full, full bore yet, but Dunmore that’s a great program, so you get to play them in the summer. That’s, there’s nothing better. There are maybe 10 or 15 teams in the state better than them. So, I mean you get to play teams like that. It’s great,” said Hughes.
“We built on our defense. And just the energy has been there and it’s good to see that especially in the summer and it’s a good way to start our season,” Alers said.
“4 seniors starting, so I mean we just have to come out, you know, really show our leadership out there and you know when it comes out as seniors, you know, we do what we do, you know, uplift the younger guys and, you know, show them what to do,” Chalk said.
And no matter the results, everyone was pleased to get some important summer reps in.
“Just getting better individually and as a team, and it gives us an idea of what the guys have to go, you know, go through individually for the next 3 months and, and as a team, and, uh. You know you’ll be able to see this benefit you later in December,” said Callejas Jr.
“Definitely beneficial just to kind of build on what we had from last year and just get ready for our season,” Alers said.
“I mean, us really are coming together this summer after not that the best season last year. I mean, we just came together and really got after it this summer,” Chalk said.
Squads will now take a bit of a break before gearing up for the new season. AJ Myers, News Watch 16 Sports, Lackawanna County.
