The Pittsburgh Steelers brought in a pair of veteran free agent defensive backs Thursday for a visit, according to the NFL transaction sheet. With three defensive backs on PUP and another who hasn’t yet logged a full practice, Pittsburgh hosted Jordan Whitehead and Eric Scott for visits.

Whitehead was a fourth-round pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018. He played seven years in the league with 101 starts, but missed the 2025 season after suffering a neck injury during a car crash and subsequent surgery. Part of his visit may have included a physical with the team doctors who are not strangers to that type of surgery after performing it on Broderick Jones and Asante Samuel Jr. Whitehead was cleared to return to football activities just days ago on July 21.

In 105 game appearances, Whitehead has 557 total tackles, 31 TFLs, 2.5 sacks, 45 passes defensed, 11 INTs, and two forced fumbles. He has played a strong mix of strong safety, free safety, and slot. If Pittsburgh signs him, he will assimilate into the rest of the versatile secondary.

The University of Pittsburgh product measured in at 5103, 198 pounds with 29 3/4-inch arms coming out of college in 2018. He ran a 4.59-second 40-yard dash with a 34-inch vertical.

Scott was one of the Dallas Cowboys’ two sixth-round draft picks in 2023, so Mike McCarthy should be quite familiar with him. After nearly a year with McCarthy, the Cowboys waived Scott at roster cutdowns before the 2024 season. He has spent the last couple of years bouncing between the Kansas City Chiefs’ roster and practice squad.

Scott hasn’t appeared in a regular-season game yet. He measured in at 6010, 204 pounds, and 32 3/8-inch arms out of Southern Miss. He did not participate in the 40-yard dash, but he put up 16 reps on the bench press and recorded an impressive 39 1/2-inch vertical.

Scott primarily played outside corner in college. With Joey Porter Jr., Jalen Ramsey, and Donte Kent all on PUP, Pittsburgh could use additional cornerback depth.

Adding either player to the roster would require a corresponding roster move to make room.
