The volunteers who maintain the Erie Rainbow Bridge Pet Memorial Garden are asking the community for help in preserving one of the area’s most meaningful places of remembrance after recent vandalism left visible damage to the memorial.
Created as a peaceful sanctuary for those grieving the loss of a beloved pet, the Rainbow Bridge Pet Memorial Garden has become a cherished destination for families throughout the region. Every brick, flower, memorial stone, and keepsake placed within the garden represents a pet who was deeply loved and continues to be remembered.
For many visitors, the memorial serves as the only physical place where they can go to feel close to a cherished companion who has passed away.
Recently, volunteers discovered multiple tire and skid marks on the Rainbow Bridge and surrounding patio. While organizers understand that the bridge’s bright colors and beautiful gardens naturally attract children and families visiting Scott Park, they are reminding the public that the memorial is not part of the nearby playground and is intended as a place for quiet reflection, healing, and remembrance.
To help protect the site, organizers are asking that bicycles, BMX bikes, mountain bikes, scooters, skateboards, skates, tricycles, and all other wheeled recreational equipment remain off the bridge and patio area. The only exception is ADA-approved mobility devices.
Unlike many public spaces, the memorial has no paid maintenance staff or repair budget. The garden is cared for entirely by volunteers who donate their time and energy to keep the area beautiful and welcoming.
Any repairs required as a result of damage must be paid for with funds that would otherwise support ANNA Shelter and its mission of providing food, shelter, medical care, and second chances to animals waiting for forever homes.
Volunteers are also encouraging parents and guardians to supervise young children while visiting the memorial. Organizers hope families will take the opportunity to teach children about the meaning of the Rainbow Bridge while helping them understand the importance of respecting flowers, memorial items, and personal keepsakes left by grieving pet owners.
In response to recent incidents, the memorial area is now under surveillance. Organizers warn that individuals caught damaging, stealing from, or vandalizing the Rainbow Bridge Pet Memorial Garden may face criminal mischief charges.
Despite the disappointment caused by the damage, volunteers say they remain grateful for the overwhelming support the memorial has received from the community over the years.
The Erie Rainbow Bridge Pet Memorial Garden is currently seeking volunteers to help remove the tire marks and assist with repainting the bridge in the coming days.
