The unemployment rate for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area dipped one-tenth of a percentage point from May to 4.8% in June, according to data from the state Department of Labor and Industry. The rate is down two-tenths of a percentage point from June 2025.
The labor force for the region — consisting of Lackawanna, Luzerne and Wayne counties — increased by 600 over the month and 4,800 over the year, industry officials said.
Employment figures increased by 800 over the month and 5,000 over June 2025, according to state data.
The unemployment rate for Lackawanna County dropped six-tenths of a percentage point from May, to 4%, state officials said. Likewise, the unemployment rate for Luzerne County decreased by six-tenths of a percentage point, to 4.8%.
The number of not seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs in the metro area increased by 100 over the month and 700 over the year, according to state data.
Notably, the region experienced a decrease of 1,200 jobs in the transportation, warehousing and utilities sector over the year and an increase of 1,200 jobs in the healthcare and social assistance sector over June 2025, state data shows.
The statewide unemployment rate decreased one-tenth of a percentage point from May, to 4.1% in June, state officials said. Pennsylvania’s rate stayed one-tenth of a percentage point below the national unemployment rate of 4.2% — which also dropped one-tenth of a percentage point over the month.
The state’s unemployment rate dipped by two-tenths of a percentage point, from 4.3% in June 2025, while the national rate increased by one-tenth of a percentage point over the year, officials added.
