National Night Out brings Erie community together with police, first responders
Neighborhoods across Erie County are coming together Tuesday for National Night Out, an annual event designed to strengthen relationships between residents, law enforcement and community organizations.
The event transforms parks, streets and neighborhoods into gathering places where families can enjoy activities, meet local organizations and connect with public safety agencies in a welcoming environment.
Organizers say National Night Out encourages community involvement and serves as a reminder that stronger neighborhoods are built when people come together. The event also provides an opportunity for residents to interact with police officers and first responders outside of emergency situations, helping build trust through positive conversations.
“This is a great opportunity for neighbors to meet each other,” said Mike Jaruszewicz, executive director of the United Way of Erie County. “But more importantly, for us to connect with law enforcement and first responders in non-emergency situations.”
Jaruszewicz said National Night Out creates opportunities for neighbors to gather at block parties, cookouts and other community events.
“National Night Out really creates the opportunity for fun gatherings — either block parties or cookouts — where we can interact with each other, build some of those positive relationships, get connected to community resources and have a lot of fun,” he said.
Communities across the country host National Night Out each year to promote crime prevention, strengthen neighborhood partnerships and encourage residents to become more involved in their communities.
