Nathan Wilczynski, 18, of Spring Township was the driver killed Sunday morning when a car plunged into a water-filled former quarry in the township, police said.
Wilczynski, who graduated in June from Wilson High School, was pronounced dead by a Berks County deputy coroner after the vehicle he had been driving was removed from the former E.J. Breneman Quarry on Sunday.
An autopsy Monday determined the cause of death was drowning. A ruling on the manner of death is pending further investigation by Spring Township police and the coroner’s office, officials said.
The incident at Yerger Boulevard and State Hill Road was reported to the Berks County 911 Center Sunday at about 6:45 a.m. as a water emergency, officials said.
Responders saw a set of tire tracks leading to the quarry, which is on township-owned property next to the township’s Yerger Boulevard yard-waste drop-off site. Investigators confirmed a vehicle was submerged.
Divers and a towing contractor removed the vehicle, according to the coroner’s office.
