Northampton County will soon have a new executive.
Democrat Tara Zrinski holds an insurmountable lead over Republican Tom Giovanni in the race for Northampton County executive, according to unofficial results. Mail-in ballots are still being counted.
Zrinski celebrated with friends and supporters at McCarthy’s Red Stag Pub in Bethlehem.
Zrinski beat out Amy Cozze in the May primary election to earn a spot on Tuesday’s ballot.
Giovanni ran unopposed in the primary.
Zrinski is the current county controller. Previously, she was a Northampton County commissioner.
She has a background in education, journalism and writing.
Zrinski has served on the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority, Lehigh Valley Planning Commission, Wildlands Conservancy, Northampton County Conservation Districts Board and the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation Board.
She said if elected, she will work to attract businesses, support small business owners and create good-paying jobs.
Zrinksi has also talked about preserving farmland, protecting water and air.
Giovanni is currently a member of Northampton County Council and a longtime owner of an IT company called High Tech Laser Systems.
He said he feels there is a lack of accountability, integrity and transparency in county government right now.
One of the things he has talked about during this campaign is protecting family farms to keep them going generation to generation.
Giovanni has also discussed protecting seniors and rejecting tax increases as well.
They were running to serve a position that has been held by current County Executive Lamont McClure since 2018. McClure, a Democrat, announced in January he would not seek a third term. He is campaigning for Congress in next year’s race in the 7th District, which includes all of Carbon, Lehigh and Northampton counties, as well as parts of Monroe County.
