Philadelphia Zoo, the first zoo in America, opens its gates for Firstival to celebrate a legacy of milestones: the first cheetah birth in a zoo, the first North American giant river otter birth, and the first orangutan birth in the United States, among others. In 2025, the zoo notched another achievement: Mommy, a Western Santa Cruz Galápagos tortoise, became a first-time mother at 97. According to artist Gwenn Seemel, the zoo’s real firsts happen quietly, in the moments a child realizes that humans are simply one of Earth’s many extraordinary animals.

The African Culture Festival extends the celebration of South Philly’s Odunde Festival — the largest African American street fest of its kind in the country.
