ALLENTOWN, Pa. — When the call comes in, first responders don’t hesitate before jumping into action.
Catholic Charities and St. Luke’s Sacred Heart Health Center wanted to say thank you to Allentown’s first responders.
It’s lunchtime at St. Luke’s Sacred Heart in Allentown.
The menu will make your mouth water, pulled pork, mac and cheese, and coleslaw.
But the food is the side dish, gratitude is the main course.
“We’re showing our appreciation for the first responders, firefighters, of course, police, EMTs, those in the medical profession, because of the great work they do in our community,” said Allentown Bishop Alfred Schlert.
This summer, that work included a massive 6-alarm warehouse fire that destroyed six nearby homes, displacing seven families.
Authorities say two juveniles intentionally set the fire.
Those who fought it say they were just doing their duty.
“For me, it’s not just a job, you know. It’s a calling,” said Allentown Police Chief Charles Roca.
A calling that doesn’t ask for recognition.
“It’s amazing. Very grateful for them giving back to the community,” said Allentown Paramedic Mason Brett.
But it feels good when you get it.
“It’s nice that the community gives back to us. We give back to the community. It’s a win-win situation for everybody,” said Allentown Fire Department Battalion Chief Sean O’Neill.
Bishop Alfred Schert says first responders are a blessing to every community, and today was about giving them the comfort they provide every day.
“Thank a first responder when you see them,” said Pam Russo, Secretary for Youth Protection and Catholic Human Services, Diocese of Allentown.
