NORTHERN TIER, PA. (WENY) — A part of Route 6 in Pennsylvania that spans the Northern Tier has been designated a scenic byway.
The newly designated span of road stretches 211 miles through Tioga, Potter, McKean and Warren Counties and connects residents to key boroughs as well as travelers to 22 state parks, including the Allegheny National Forest and the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon.
Stakeholders who worked for years to achieve the designation celebrated the honor at a ceremony on Oct. 30.
“We are extremely grateful for the support and collaboration from communities along the corridor, including PennDOT, local municipalities, and regional leaders,” said Candace Hillyard, Executive Director of the PA Route 6 Alliance. “This designation is the result of years of dedicated work by the Alliance and our partners. It’s not just about protecting the beauty of the landscape. It’s about creating lasting opportunities for the communities that call this corridor, home.”
In order to be designated a scenic byway, roads have to have significant historic, cultural or scenic qualities.
This is the 24th such road designation in the State of Pennsylvania.
