Officials identified the man accused of shooting a police officer in Camden, New Jersey, late Tuesday night.
The incident occurred around 10:50 p.m. when Camden County officers tried to conduct a pedestrian stop on a man – later identified as 23-year-old Marques Jones of Camden – near Chesapeake and Congress roads.
During the stop, Jones allegedly pointed a gun towards one of the officers and fired multiple shots, shooting the officer once in the left arm. A Camden County police sergeant then pulled out their own weapon and fired at Jones, shooting him once in the body. Jones was then taken into custody.
Both the injured officer and Jones were taken to the hospital for treatment. The officer was listed in stable condition while Jones is in critical condition, investigators said. Police also said they found a handgun at the crime scene.
Jones is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, pointing a firearm at a law enforcement officer and possession of prohibited weapons/devices (extended magazine).
