The Berks County Genealogical Society is presenting “DNA — What We Inherit, How and Why: led by John Kissinger on Aug. 29 in the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, Room 413, 201 Washington St., Reading. Wernersville

There will be an open house at the Wernersville train station Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. The fully restored station is at 20 E. Penn Ave. There will be artifacts and displays on the Philadelphia Railroad and South Mountain Resorts presented by volunteers from the Heidelberg Heritage Society.

The society also is holding an open house at its Historic Lerch Tavern Museum, 182 W. Penn Ave., Sunday from 1 to 3. It features three floors of displays and artifacts representing the history and culture of the area surrounding Wernersville.

Back-to-school event

State Rep. Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz will host a kickoff to the back-to-school season on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at her district office, 1111 Penn Ave., Wyomissing. The event, open to all families with school-aged children, will include free backpacks with school supplies, free haircuts, school supplies for teachers and an opportunity for members of the community to access state resources.

Constitution program

This month’s LWV Berks County program on BCTV is “The Constitution – Origins through Amendments.” It premieres Tuesday at 9 p.m. and repeats on Aug. 18 and 25. It can be viewed on BCTV or streaming on www.bctv.org. The program explores the creation and genius of the Constitution and how its amendments worked to reflect our evolving understanding of justice and rights.

Guests are Michael A. Armato, associate professor of political science and pre-law adviser at Albright College, and Joel A. Ready, a partner in the Berks County-based Cornerstone Law Firm. Austen Kennedy and Karen Parish will host.

Run4sam

The 18th annual Run4Sam fundraiser is set for Sunday at Gring’s Mill Recreation Area in Spring Township. The event celebrates the late Samuel Brooklyn Reed through running, fellowship and giving back. Proceeds support scholarships, local nonprofit organizations and improvements at Gring’s Mill.

Events include a 4-mile run, a 2-mile walk and a fun run for children 12 and under. Registration starts at 8 a.m. The race begins at 9:30 and the walk at 9:45. The kids run after the adult runners return. Race applications are available at www.run4sam.net or register at www.pretzelcitysports.com.

Concert fundraiser

California singer-songwriter Bobby Jo Valentine performs in a concert fundraiser Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. in All Souls Ecumenical Catholic Communion/Calvary United Church of Christ, 640 Centre Ave., Reading.

Tickets are $10 and available at the All Souls ECC Facebook page or at the door. Proceeds benefit the LGBT Center of Greater Reading and Reading Pride Celebration.

Candle workshop

An early American candle making workshop is scheduled for Sept. 20 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Daniel Boone Homestead in Exeter Township, presented by Daniel Boone Homestead Associates.

Greg and Peggy Geesaman of Heritage Art and Craft Studios will teach the art of crafting candles with natural beeswax. Participants will create a double wick beeswax hand-dipped candle and a cinnamon scented ornament. The program includes a historic presentation by Colonial period interpreters.

Sisters Network is holding its Pink Diamond Breast Cancer Gala Sept. 26 from 5 to 10 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Reading. The event honors survivors, pays tribute to lost loved ones and seeks to raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer.

Beer and wine

The 11th annual Antietam Valley Community Partnership Carsonia Craft Beer and Wine Amusement is set for Oct. 10 from noon to 4 p.m. at Reading Liederkranz, 143 Spook Lane, Lower Alsace Township. The rain-or-shine event features more than 30 craft breweries along with a selection of wines, spirits and ciders. There will be food vendors and music by Sloth Love Chunk. Cost is $45 for general admission and $10 for nondrinkers. Only those 21 and older are permitted to attend.
